York’s Homeless Drop-In-Center: Is a fully functioning Drop-in-Center where the homeless to use toilet facilities, take a shower, snack ,beverages and weekend meals, establish a mailing address, use laundry facilities, obtain free medical attention and transportation if needed to the Hospital. They obtain clothing, shoes, personal hygiene products, homeless survival kits, sleeping bags blankets, etc…….
Mail Center: where the homeless, who by definition have no fixed address, may receive mail.
Search Center: to use a computer to look for family and friends anywhere in the United States or where family members can post the names of individuals they believe to be homeless and are searching for them.
Job Center: Clients have access to day jobs and job listings on the state and local levels. Listings are on a computer.
Case Management and Emergency Shelter: counseling and shelter referrals/motel.
Training Center: provides short-term, income producing classes to prepare the homeless for jobs, such as: Moving/packing, professional painting, clerical/computer skills, janitorial/domestic engineering and security/loss prevention positions. These classes are preceded by Life Skills Training during which an individual’s skills are evaluated. This center is under construction.
Health Center: Health Connect Van provides on site, free medical attention to people, with no insurance and make available to them health care options. Volunteer Doctors and Nurses are from York Hospital. Free eyeglasses for homeless only, provided by another source.
Food Pantry: provides non-perishable and canned goods on an emergency basis to homeless, hidden homeless and needy people.
Behavior Health Drop-In-Center: A Resource and Wellness Center which provides Referrals, Confidential Case Management, Peer to peer support, Counseling, Support Groups, Quiet Room, Social Activities, Children’s Station, Laundry Facilities, Computer Training Center, Mail Box Center, Access to Mobile Medical Van…Open 7 days a week and Holidays…Director Collette Walker
Out Reach Worker: travels throughout York County searching for homeless singles and families in the woods, in abandon buildings, under bridges, in the sewers (when reported) and other non-traditional shelter. He then provides a homeless survival kit and/or transportation to our designated Motel. On the next work day our case manager assists the client.
Food Runs: provide a hot meal and snack pack with beverage every Saturday and Sunday evening at three different locations in York. Number of servings average is 350 per night. This is how the organization started.
Household items, appliances and furniture: are available from community donations to homeless just getting a room or apartment and to the poor/needy.
School Day “Stuff the Bus” program: with the help of The York Galleria, West Manchester Malls, Churches, Businesses, Civic Groups and Community residents, homeless and needy children are provided excellent used and new outer clothing, underwear, socks, shoes and school supplies.
Thanksgiving Baskets: York’s Helping Hand is the only agency which provides a basket to needy singles in the community. In addition, poor and needy extra large families are issued baskets.
Christmas Toy Give-Away: provides excellent used and new toys, books and gift baskets to homeless, poor and needy families in the community. Please look for our Shining Star program and, Thanksgiving/Christmas programs which include Adopt-a-Family programs.
